Viet Cuong (Johnny) Nguyen

I'm a first-year PhD Student in Computer Science at the School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. I'm very fortunate to be co-advised by Professors Munmun De Choudhury and Srijan Kumar

Prior to beginning my Ph.D in 2023, I received B.S and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I have also interned at the Reusable AI Experiences team @ Intuit as a Software Engineering Intern

Research

I'm broadly interested in understanding and designing safer and fairer interactions within algorithm-mediated communication systems (e.g. social media, LLM-based chat). My work leverages methods from natural language processing (NLP), social computing and human computer interaction (HCI). I'm currently particularly excited about the following research directions

  • Anti-sociality in Online Communities [COMPASS 2023, CHI VSP 2023, ICLR PML4DC 2022]
  • NLP + Health [JMIR MH 2022]
  • Human-Centered AI [CHI 2024]
